Exploring tomorrow's sustainable forestry and agriculture

Summary

The climate crisis and the nature crisis are each enormous challenges on their own. Together and happening at the same time, they are almost impossible to solve. Massive change is needed across all countries and sectors to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, we must make a major effort to capture and store the CO2 that has already been released. And all of this needs to happen while we protect our natural environment. This is by far the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced.

Global food production accounts for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions today. The world’s forests absorb and store a net 20% of the world’s annual emissions. The first number needs to go down drastically, the second needs to increase significantly.

This is what Sylva is all about. We will research and test new methods for forestry that captures more CO2 while also being better for nature and biodiversity. Together with our partners, we will develop improved methods for food production that result in lower greenhouse gas emissions than today’s agriculture. We have already started on both fronts.
